Temperatures are cooler in the soothing shade of snowcapped High Atlas peaks, making the Ourika Valley a refreshing escape from Marrakesh's summer heat. The valley is particularly enchanting from February to April when almond and cherry orchards bloom vibrantly, and wildflowers create a riot of colours. Unfortunately, the beauty and accessibility of Ourika have led to significant development, now posing a threat to its natural charm. The area features makeshift cafes and BBQ joints at Oulmes, connected by flimsy rope bridges along the riverside. Setti Fatma, located at the end of the valley, serves as a summer resort and well-known trekking base. For a High Atlas experience with fewer tourist crowds and vendors, consider exploring the Mizane or Zat Valleys. Distance: 90 km / Ascent: 352m / Descent: 352m
Amizmiz is set in a truly stunning landscape, with lush pine forests, strawberry groves, and snowcapped mountains in the distance. Popular activities in this area include hiking and horseback riding. Whether you're a novice or an experienced traveller, Amizmiz offers routes and day trips suitable for various skill levels. The absence of traffic and pollution in Amizmiz provides unspoiled vistas of plains, rolling hills, and mountains, perfect for photography enthusiasts. Distance: 136 km / Ascent: 1177m / Descent: 1482m
The village of Imouzzer des Ida Outanane is nestled in the foothills of the High Atlas. Nearby lies the aptly named Paradise Valley, a gorge lined with oleander and palm trees, serving as a popular picnic and swimming destination. Local producers have established a "honey route," and stalls offer honey and argan oil. Signposts along the road indicate walking trails. In February and March, the almond trees blossom, creating a breathtaking white landscape. The village hosts a honey harvest and festival in July and August, along with the olive harvest in late November, where locals climb the trees to collect olives, which are then pressed into oil. Thursdays are market days. Distance: 112 km / Ascent: 1896m / Descent: 1633m
Taroudant, also referred to as "Little Marrakesh," is a captivating destination situated in the Souss Valley. Enclosed by striking red mud walls, with the majestic peaks of the High Atlas in view, Taroudant's souqs and squares exude a mystical charm. Beyond its allure, Taroudant is a thriving market town where Berbers trade the bounties of the Oued Souss plain. The town doesn't boast must-see attractions but offers a leisurely atmosphere for strolling and lingering. Its two souqs are worth exploring, with a more relaxed ambience compared to Marrakesh. Additionally, with the lesser-explored western High Atlas, the Anti Atlas, and the coastline nearby, Taroudant serves as an ideal base for trekking and various activities. Located just 65km inland from Al Massira Airport, Taroudant provides a more atmospheric stopover to and from the airport compared to Agadir. Distance: 105 km / Ascent: 758m / Descent: 1694m
Tin Mal presents the remains of a medieval Almohad fortress, once the capital of an empire spanning from Mali to Tunisia and Spain. Established by Ibn Tumart in 1124, the city served as the cultural and religious centre of the Almohads until its destruction by the rival Merinid dynasty in the 1270s. The only structure spared was the monumental mosque, built in 1156 in honour of Ibn Tumart, as per Almohad doctrine. Ouirgane, a Berber village nestled in the Atlas Mountains, lies 1500 meters above sea level at the heart of Toubkal National Park, just an hour south of Marrakesh. It embodies a quintessential Berber village, hosting a weekly market, or souq, that plays a significant role in the village's social life. Donkeys are the primary mode of transportation, and the villagers are as warm and welcoming as the natural surroundings. Distance: 161 km / Ascent: 2988m / Descent: 2299m
